Last Sunday the Steeler’s clinched the AFC North title with a win over the Colts and the Browns losing to the Jets. With a division title under their belt, the Steelers announced Tuesday that Ben Roethlisberger will not be playing Sunday along with some other starters not named. This means that for the first time since last season, Mason Rudolph will be starting a game, a game against the team that slammed a helmet into his head last year in the Cleveland Browns.

Steelers vs Browns Preview

What’s At Stake

As I mentioned the Steelers beat the Colts last Sunday to clinch their division and lock up a playoff spot. However because the Bills won on Monday night, Pittsburgh dropped to the third seed in the playoffs. This does not seem to really matter to them much though because of Rudolph being awarded the start; meaning they are happy with a three seed because the two seed no longer gets a first-round bye like the NFL has done in years past. Still, if the Steelers win and the Bills lose to the Dolphins Sunday, they are locking up the two seed but at worst will finish at the number three spot.

As for the Browns, literally everything is on the line in this one for a chance to get into the playoffs. Their loss to the Jets dropped them to 10-5 and all the way down to the last possible playoff spot as the seventh seed. A win would automatically clinch some random seed in the post season, but a loss would mean they would need the Colts to lose to the Jaguars as Indianapolis is the only team left who could take that spot from the Browns but the Colts losing is unlikely.

Browns Falling Apart Down the Stretch

Cleveland has lost two of its last three games and still are in a position to beat out teams for a playoff birth. That alone is wild, but was even more wild was the fact that they had virtually no wide receivers for their game against the Jets last Sunday due to Covid-19 tracing.

Still I’m not making any excuses for Baker Mayfield in that loss as they still had a backfield with Kareem Hunt and Nick Chubb to work with and Mayfield fumbled twice at two crucial times to cost them the game.

Odds

It’s also worrisome that the Browns could not stop the Ravens in their last home game, giving up 47 points and are actually giving up more than they score on average; it’s crazy how this team is 10-5 to begin with.

Steelers Stopping the Skid

Ever since their loss to Washington at the beginning of the month to stop their undefeated streak, the Steelers looked to be in a freefall as losers of three straight going into Sunday against the Colts and they even fell down 24-7 in the game. But the offense and defense found their stride and came back to not only win the game but their division as well.

It is clear this team is reliant on Big Ben and their defensive to win them games as their running back core of James Conner and Benny Snell have been very unproductive and the receiving corps is only as good as their QB.

Steelers vs Browns Pick & Prediction

If you are betting this game wait until closer towards Sunday to see who is actually playing for the Steelers because some starters still might want to get reps due to Pittsburgh having something to technically play for. However Vegas seems to think Big Ben’s absence will already cause this team to lose as the Browns are listed as 10 point favorites at home. And I am agreeing with Vegas that Cleveland will win this game, but not by 10 points. Baker has proven himself to be too inconsistent at times especially in high pressure situations like this game; his security blanket of Chubb and Hunt will let the Browns win this one and make the playoffs but 10 points is way too much in my opinion.
